Synopsis
Written by anesthesiologists and cardiologists, the 19 contributions in this manual describe applications of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) beyond bypass surgery, including its use in the assessment of ventricular systolic function and diastolic function; for evaluating valvular stenosis, valvular regurgitation, congenital heart disease, cardiac masses, pericardial diseases, cardiomyopathies, diseases of the aorta, prosthetic valvular function, and cardiovascular disease in pregnant patients; and as a monitoring modality in heart transplant surgery and during mitral valve repair. Each chapter summarizes the physiology, pathophysiology, tomographic views, and required two-dimensional, M-mode, and Doppler echocardiography data for a number of common disease states. Introductory chapters cover the physics of imaging, ultrasound system controls, tomographic views, and the practice of TEE, while the final chapter discusses new applications in intraoperative echocardiography. Each chapter includes example images and a section of self-assessment questions for which answers are provided. Many of the contributors are affiliated with Duke University Medical Center.
