랑만의 『사람발생학』 열번째 판에 대한 번역 작업은 지금은 정년 퇴임하신 서울대학교 의과대학 해부학교실의 백상호, 장가용 두 교수님께서 1997년에 주도하신 7판 번역 작업, 뒤 이어 2002년에 있었던 8판 번역 작업의 연속이라고 할 수 있습니다. 처음 7판 번역 작업을 시작한 1997년 이후 어느덧 10년 가까운 세월이 흘렀고, 그 동안에 두 분 선생님께서는 정년퇴임하시고 번역에 참여하는 이들도 몇몇은 얼굴이 바뀌었습니다. 비록 신판에는 많은 내용들이 첨가되기는 하였으나 기본적으로는 처음 번역 작업이 토대를 이룬 가운데 거듭되는 보완 작업이 이어지는 것으로 보아야 할 것입니다. 이번 10판을 번역하면서 지난 판의 내용을 다시 꼼꼼히 들여다 보니 당시에는 미처 깨닫지 못했던 부분들이 솔솔이 나오는 것을 보고, 다음에 다시 10판 번역을 들여다 보았을 때는 이런 일이 없도록 해야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다만 이것도 사람의 일인지라 일말의 두려움이 없지 않습니다. 8판에 이어서 10판 번역판의 제목도 이 책의 원제인 『의학발생학(Medical Embryology)』보다는 이전 번역판의 제목인 『사람발생학』으로 하게 되었습니다. 이는 이번 작업이 7판의 맥을 그대로 잇고 있음을 의미하는 것이라고 할 수 있습니다. 신판에서는 발생과정에 관여하는 유전자에 대한 분자생물학적인 내용이 많이 추가되어서 최근의 발생학 분야의 학문적 성과가 반영되어 있습니다. 또한 삼차원적인 그림과 보다 많은 주사전자현미경 사진이 더해져 복잡한 발생과정을 좀 더 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 짜여 있습니다. 많은 학생들이 이 책의 내용을 통하여 발생과정을 이해하고 장차 의사로서 부딪히게 될 선천기형에 대한 진단, 치료, 예방에 도움이 되었으면 하는 바람입니다.이 책이 나올 수 있는 토대가 되어 주신 백상호, 장가용 교수님께 다시 한번 감사의 말씀을 드리며, 좋은 책이 번역될 수 있도록 기회를 제공해 주신 (주) 이퍼블릭 코리아의 유성권 사장님과 어려운 과정을 묵묵히 진행해 주신 임직원 여러분께 감사의 말씀을 드리는 바입니다.
